Judging, Hiring, Prizes and Leeches… #bethenext

Jul 10, 2012   //   by Karen Lopez   //   Blog, Database, Fun, Professional Development, SQL Server  //  5 Comments

If you’ve ever been on the interviewer side of a interview, you know how tough it is to make judgements about someone and their work in a very short, unnatural situation and time frame.  I’ve been invited to participate in something even more exciting…a reality show Be The Next Microsoft Employee.  This web-based reality show is a contest run by Microsoft Learning for hiring a new SQL Server professional.  Four contestants, Alex, Chris, Michael and Stacy, compete in a series of challenges given to them by Buck Woody (@buckwoody | blog ) and guest judges like me.  Like all reality shows, these challenges aren’t going to be mundane, sit-in-a-quiet-cube-and-take-a-few-hours-to-plan-your-solution efforts.  I hear some even involve spiders, water, catapults and leeches.  Okay, that might just have been Buck scaring people again. Or not.

We will be judging victims candidates on the quality, completeness, professionalism and technical correctness of their solutions.  That part is just like in real life…except for cameras, producers and an entire professional film crew. And leeches, I think.  Just to make all more fun.

Anyway, the trailer for the reality show is up now.  Episodes will start going up on the Microsoft Learning website on 24 July.

You Can Win, Too

Microsoft Learning is also running a prize contest for viewers.  You can win a free training class from New Horizons and certification exam vouchers from Prometric. This contest is open to nearly everyone, so not just US residents.  Register for a chance to increase your SQL Server skills.

Stay tuned here for more exciting details, plus behind-the-scenes posts and photos. Seeing the contestants, knowing the judges…this is going to be one heck of a ride…

Vote on Endeavour Crew’s Wake Up Song – #NASATweetup

Apr 4, 2011   //   by Karen Lopez   //   Blog, Fun, Space  //  No Comments

imagePrevious Shuttle missions have used commercial songs to wake up crew members, but NASA is going with original songs for the STS-134 mission.  NASA wants your help choose the songs.  There are 10 original songs and you can listen to them on the NASA site.  I think quite a few of them are perfect space wakeup songs.  You can vote up to launch time.

Get voting.

Thanks Everyone Who Voted: I Won a SCOTTEVEST XAE

Jan 4, 2011   //   by Karen Lopez   //   Blog, Fun  //  No Comments

imageI’m happy to share that my video won the SCOTTEVEST XAE Unboxing Contest.  That means that Rob is going to be wearing the 20-pocket beautiful jacket.

Watch for a new unboxing video by the both of us when it gets here.

I appreciate everyone who took the time to view my video, which is the first one I’ve ever done that included me – all the others I’d done were for webinars and featured only PowerPoint slides and software demos.

Once I got over the whole “I hate having my picture taken” part, it was fun to do.

I’ve had a couple people ask me what I used in producing the video:

  • Camera: My iPhone 3GS (my video camera had not yet arrived).
  • Video production: TechSmith’s Camtasia (love it)
  • Intro segments: Standard library components that come with Camtasia
  • Music: Hallelujah Chorus from Project Gutenberg
  • Winking Barbie effect: Camtasia using the callout feature to mimic a wink.

I took Erin Stellato’s (blog | Twitter) advice from her winning SQL Cruise video and did it all in one take.  It’s funny how if you plan to have only one take you don’t spend too much time trying to get every single line/point perfect, so it flows better and is more fun to do.

Travel Vest for Women Unboxing Video + Need Your Vote

Dec 31, 2010   //   by Karen Lopez   //   Blog, Fun  //  3 Comments

I’ve uploaded a video to YouTube of an unboxing video I made for a contest.  As is my usual style, it is full of snark and happy things…at the same time.

. You can help me win the contest by:

  1. Watching the short video I made
    A DataChick Christmas

  2. “Liking” the video on YouTube (You may need to double click on the video above to view it on YouTube)
To LIKE the video you have to be on the YouTube page and click on the thumbs up button on the lower right of the video:

What’s the contest and prize? Scott Jordan, Founder of SCOTTEVEST, is running a video contest that ends on New Year’s Eve (that’s TODAY).  The prize is a beautiful SCOTTEVEST Leather XAE jacket that I want to win for my husband and business partner, Rob.

Isn’t it beautiful? Like my Travel Vest for Women, it has mucho pockets (20 in this jacket, 22 pockets in mine).  It even has a pocket for an iPad.  Look at that price, though…I would really like to win one for Rob.

I really appreciate your help in viewing and voting on the video.  I’m sure Rob would love to have this jacket…and when they come out with one for women, he’ll have to win one for me, too.

Contest: Tell Me Why You Need a New Tassimo Brewing System

Nov 29, 2010   //   by Karen Lopez   //   Blog, Social Networking  //  9 Comments

Good news:  Tassimo Canada sent me a new home brewing system to try.

Great news: Tassimo Canada has given me TWO more Tassimo Brewing Systems to give away to blog readers.

Tassimo Brew Bot – *not* Exactly as shown

This contest is open only to Canadian residents.  Sorry everyone else.  I hope you have been good this year; maybe you can ask Santa for one.  We do have future contests planned, so stand by.  But over there.  Yeah, a little bit further over.  Thanks.

To make this easy, the management team at InfoAdvisors will be choosing the two best answers to this question:

How would having instant access to an infinite number of fresh cups of coffee make you more productive at work?

The rules:

  1. Must be a Canadian resident to comment and win.
  2. Comments are moderated an subject to our posting guidelines.
  3. One comment per person.
  4. You must give your answer in the comments to this blog post.  Comments posted elsewhere will be read and enjoyed but not considered.
  5. A winner will be chosen from answers posted prior to 6PM EST 30 Nov.  That’s tomorrow!
  6. You have to supply a valid e-mail address in your comment so that we can contact you with instructions on how to claim your prize.
  7. A skills testing question will need to be answered.
  8. Two systems will be awarded, one each to two people.
  9. All selections are final.  No cash equivalents.  No substitutions. Your mileage may vary.  Subject to arcane laws in your local jurisdiction.  Do not immerse this rule in water.
